When a substantial leak occurs in a pipeline within a continuous process facility, three alternatives are often available to resolve the problem. The first method includes shutting down the pipeline for traditional repair, the second letting the leak continue for a limited time, and the third repairing the breach while the pipeline continues at full pressure and temperature.

Pipeline leaks can occur at flanges, straight pipes, elbows, tees, and valve glands, among other places. This is owing to the nature of the pipeline contents, particularly where the flow is turbulent and the pipeline is prone to corrosion and/or erosion, such as near elbows and tees or at a flange junction or a valve. It can also happen at pipeline weld sites where the pipeline material is not uniform.
